Mr. Bryant was first introduced to Ketsugo Goju-Ryu in 2001 by his brother Jarrell. His brother had been looking at different dojos in the area and came across Jay Trombley's Karate Academy. Jarrell told Mr. Bryant that he had to come check out the traditional karate school run by a Marine veteran who trained in Okinawa, Japan in the late 1950's. Mr. Bryant visited with Shodai Trombley and watched his class and decided to join. Mr. Bryant was particularly impressed with the self defense. The idea that someone is trying to force their will on you and you show them that they can't was really appealing to Mr. Bryant.
After receiving his 1st kyu brown belt Mr. Bryant took time off from the dojo after getting married in 2006. Turns out the hiatus lasted 10 years. Mr. Bryant still trained at home and ran an after school karate program for his middle school where he was a teacher. Finally in 2016 Mr. Bryant decided to come back to karate and train under Shodai Jay Trombley again. Shodai ended up retiring from the dojo and Hanshi Robert Oliver took over the program. Under Hanshi Oliver's leadership, Mr. Bryant received his Shodan "1st degree" blackbelt in 2018. Sensei Bryant went on to receive his Sandan "3rd Degree" on April 21, 2021. Hanshi moved to Colorado in June of 2021, so Sensei Bryant took over the Texas branch of the school. Hanshi gave Sensei Bryant the title Renshi. Thus, Bryant Karate Academy was born.
